Great Bear Distribution has said a large new DC it is to set up at Markham Vale, Chesterfield, will create a “significant” number of new jobs.

The 479,000ft² site, located just off junction 29A of the M1 between Sheffield and Nottingham, should be completed in spring next year and is “exactly what we’ve been looking for”, a company spokesman said.

All the jobs at the site will be new ones with no transfers from other sites involved, he added. “No sites will be closed or reduced as a result of the Markham Vale opening. Markham Vale represents a new addition to our expanding network,” he confirmed.

Chester-based Great Bear, which operates over 4.5 million ft² of warehousing  and over 200 trucks across 30 current sites,  has enjoyed a period of substantial expansion in the last two years, announcing plans to open a new 412,000ft² warehouse in Sheffield in April last year and raising turnover by 26% and 12% in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

Sadly, the firm also announced recently that its co-founder and co-owner Colin McDavid had passed away after a long illness. McDavid founded Great Bear with business partner David Williams in 1994.
