Potter Logistics has won a 30-year rail freight contract with waste and recycling company SITA UK.

In a deal worth more than £20m, Potter Logistics will handle the transport of over 430,000-tonnes of residual household waste from its rail freight terminal at the Knowsley Industrial Estate in Knowsley, Merseyside.

The waste will be transferred by rail to SITA’s site in Teesside, which turns landfill waste into energy. SITA chose Potter Logistics’ site from six possible rail freight terminals in the Merseyside region.

Potter Logistics MD Matthew Lamb said: “With two daily trains operating between Knowsley and Teesside, Potter Logistics intends to switch certain traffic from road to rail by utilising additional capacity on these rail services.”

Potter’s Knowsley rail freight terminal has the ability to handle trains over  600 metres in length, with road links to the North West and easy access to the motorway network.
