DIY retailer B&Q is to install a biomethane gas filling station at its Swindon DC to support the operations of 50 dual-fuel trucks the firm introduced at the site in December.
The 50 trucks, split equally between Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, were brought in after two separate trials in the last two years. They will be engaged in store delivery and trunking work and are expected to cover around 100,000km each a year, a B&Q spokeswoman told Motortransport.co.uk.
The biomethane filling station, which will be installed and maintained by Gasrec, is currently subject to planning permission but should be in place by May, she added.
The use of the gas-powered vehicles, which will run on a proprietary blend of liquid biomethane and LNG, is part of B&Q’s commitment to cut CO2 emissions from transport by 50% by 2023 from 2006/2007 levels.
The retailer has already achieved a 36% reduction so far, confirmed the spokeswoman.
