Tilbury-based The Logistics Terminal (TLT) said it has seen a 100% increase in throughput in a year, reducing bottom-line storage and distribution costs for its customers.
The port centric logistics hub, which opened in January 2011, processes an average of 160 containers a week, double the volume it saw last year.
Partner Richard Newbold, MD of Essex haulier Triple A Transport, believes the operation minimises the risk of product damage through ‘over-handling’. It also decreases the number of miles goods are transported, as containers are emptied into a warehouse in Tilbury rather than transported to a DC.
Newbold said: “Lessening the transportation of goods has an immediate impact on reducing fuel for inland legs whilst reducing carbon emissions as the number of empty shipping containers being hauled across the UK is hugely reduced.”
Managing partner Mike Brown said the TLT site “allows access to 30% of the UK’s consumers within a two hour drive”.
