Rail freight operator DB Schenker Rail UK has selected Roadways Container Logistics' Birmingham Intermodal Freight Terminal (BIFT) as its Midlands rail hub.
Two DB Schenker trains from Southampton and one from Felixstowe run daily into the state-of-the-art terminal, carrying more than 770 containers a week in and out of BIFT. Roadways estimates that the three daily rail movements equate to a reduction of 6m truck miles with each train keeping an average of 52 LGVs off the road.
Marc Wynne, Roadways Container Logistics general manager, said the services into BIFT helped DB Schenker's clients avoid delays arising from road and port congestion.
“Through the use of BIFT, goods can be moved inland, closer to the delivery point ahead of booked time which then significantly reduces delays in the final and critical leg of the journey.”
