Scania has launched a fuel card based on cooperative principles, allowing operators to benefit from the bulk purchasing discounts usually reserved for the largest players in the sector.

The Scania Fuel Card is administered by The Fuelcard People, with Scania buying fuel direct on members' behalf to enhance the purchasing power of the collective.

Scania's scheme is free to join, offers a choice of fuel networks, features no minimum spend requirement and is charge-free for the first 12 months.

David Hickman, director – services development and service sales at Scania, said:  "While larger fleets are able to benefit from bulk purchases of fuel, the same does not hold true for smaller operators.

"Not only does that cost them, it also puts them at a considerable competitive disadvantage.  So the Scania Fuel Card has been specifically designed with smaller fleets in mind – although we'd be happy to welcome larger players into the scheme too."

Personal touch

All contacts with the Scania Fuel Card service are handled by named account managers, rather than call centres, and are covered by zero liability insurance in the event of loss or theft.

Operators can also review their fuel purchasing patterns online, and a pay-as-you-go option is available.

Operators can apply for the Scania Fuel Card by calling 0844 870 6937.
