Shell said it was helping hauliers transition to a greener and more sustainable future after opening its first public eHGV charge point in Nottinghamshire.
Shell Recharge at the Markham Moor Truck Stop near the A1 offers a 400kW charger for lorries using the key transport corridor.
Part of its European e-mobility ecosystem, the public charging offering is understood to be the first of a series of shared eHGV charging stations the fuel giant is planning for the UK.
Shell Markham Moor is around 25 miles south of Doncaster and 25 miles south-east of Sheffield and with 8,000 lorries passing the site every day it is considered a critical transport artery connecting major cities and regions across England.
“The future of commercial road transport will look mostly electric,” said Euan Moir, head of UK fleet solutions.
“That electric future is already coming to fruition in the UK. Providing a seamless charging experience for drivers at Shell Markham Moor is another step in helping transport companies continue to operate efficiently during the energy transition.”
Shell added that the charge point offers a user-friendly reservation system enabling fleets to guarantee availability of chargers by booking in advance and so reliably plan and schedule stops.
A recent report into progress from a government-funded programme addressing the rollout of electric lorries revealed that there were challenges installing public charging facilities.
Gridserve cited capacity issues and a current lack of eHGVs on the road, making allotting space to charging a difficult decision for MSA operators.
