Nottingham-based haulier Martyn Barratt Transport has been sold to Zero Degree Logistics, in a move triggered by spiralling cost pressures and the imminent retirement of the owner.

The sale of the family-owned firm was announced just weeks after it engaged business advisory firm PKF Smith Cooper and gave notice it intended to appoint an administrator.

Martyn Barratt Transport, which had its headquarters at Trowell, Nottingham, specialised in distribution and warehousing. Launched in 1985, the company operated a fleet of more than 60 vehicles and employed over 40 staff.

Zero Degree Logistics is part of Birmingham-based On the Rocks group, a UK frozen food and wholesale ice cream supplier which launched in 2020. The group operates a temperature-controlled nationwide delivery network, seven days a week, with next-day availability.

According to a statement from PKF Smith Cooper, the sale of Martyn Barratt Transport was a result of the business being hit by “sustained cost pressures, including increases in the National Minimum Wage, National Insurance Contributions and vehicle operating costs, alongside the owner’s planned retirement”.

Magnus Windsor, On the Rocks founder, and Amit Sharma, On The Rocks director, said: “We are delighted to welcome Martyn Barratt Transport into the group and look forward to working closely with the team, customers, and suppliers to build a sustainable and successful future.”

Dean Nelson, PKF Smith Cooper business recovery and restructuring partner, added: “We are delighted to have secured such a positive outcome for Martyn Barratt Transport, protecting all jobs and ensuring the business continues to trade successfully.

“This transaction demonstrates the value of taking proactive advice when facing financial or operational pressures. By acting early, the owners were able to protect the workforce, preserve the business, and secure a strong future under new ownership.”

PKF Smith Cooper worked with Martyn Brierley of Flint Bishop, who acted on behalf of the sellers, and Su Garner of Freeths, who advised the purchaser.
