The tradition of naming trucks after women has been resurrected by the nephew of Edward Stobart, who is relaunching the idea across the 1,500-strong WS fleet.

The craze began 50 years ago when the son of founder Eddie Stobart, Edward, named the first lorry Twiggy – and birthed a huge community of ‘Stobart Spotters’.

Now a new app has been developed called ‘WS Truck Spotting’, which enables anyone to choose a woman’s name in honour of someone they love and they will then receive a digital certificate and photo of their named truck out on the road.

Every name costs a £25 donation to the charity When You Wish Upon a Star – and the company said it would match this pound for pound.

Ed Stobart, said: “My late uncle Edward named the first truck Twiggy after the sixties icon in 1976. It started as one name on one truck – but it became part of British life.

“Families would spot them on long journeys. Drivers were proud of the name on their cab. People genuinely smiled when they saw one.

“Now we’re bringing it back – but this time, anyone can be part of it. You can name a truck after your mum, your daughter, your nan, your best friend.

“And every single name goes towards a great cause.”

Ed Stobart has relaunched the truck naming tradition as an app.
