An announcement is expected before the end of this week detailing how the HGV Road User Levy is to be enforced in Northern Ireland.

Although the levy has been payable by law in NI since April - as elsewhere in the UK - there has been no enforcement of it there so far as a result of ongoing discussions about route exemptions and NI’s failure to pass the required subordinate legislation.

The Department of the Environment has not even agreed to be the enforcing body for the levy in the region up to now.

Following a meeting on 26 June between NI Minister of the Environment Mark Durkan and the RHA, however, an announcement is expected imminently.

A spokesman for the RHA said: “We are grateful to the minister for taking the time to meet with us and are very encouraged with what was discussed. We look forward to his announcement this week, which should go some way to levelling the playing field for hauliers in Northern Ireland.”
