Training specialist HGVC has launched an app for learner drivers to help them track their training progress.
As well as displaying every step of their training and testing process, the app provides trainees with regular reminders and updates so that they stay on top of their schedules.
The HGVC app also provides full access to theory test resources and includes all necessary DVSA-approved materials for their theory test preparation.
HGVC said it also offered instant support through live in-app chat.
It cited research from Logistics UK, which found that between Q3 2023 and Q3 2024, the number of HGV drivers employed rose by 20.9% – an increase of nearly 55,000.
However, despite the increase, it identified long-standing employment challenges, including an ageing workforce, infrastructure dissatisfaction, and limited new drivers entering the profession.
James Clifford, CEO of HGVC, said: “The UK has experienced a problematic and long-term shortage of HGV drivers.
“An ageing driver population has resulted in stiff competition for skilled drivers, and there have been too many barriers to entry into the profession – especially in terms of cost and the accessibility of training.
“The skills bootcamps have made a big difference - candidates can now secure a high-paying HGV driving job in just 16 weeks.
“However, the industry and government can do more. The HGVC app will make it even easier for trainees to complete their training and get working.”
