Selby MP Keir Mather has been appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Transport (DfT), as part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent cabinet reshuffle, sparked by the departure of former Labour Party deputy leader Angela Rayner.

In his new post as a junior minister he will have responsibility for freight and borders, decarbonisation and electric vehicles.

Mather became Labour’s MP for Selby and Ainsty in a by-election in 2023 and at the age of 25, he became the youngest MP at the time.

At the 2024 General Election Mather held what had then become the Selby seat with a substantial majority.

Writing on X, Mather said it was a “privilege” to have been offered the role, adding: “Keeping Britain moving is central to achieving economic growth. Looking forward to getting started!”

Transport secretary Heidi Alexander said she was “delighted” to welcome Mr Mather to the DfT.

Commenting on the reshuffle at the DfT, RHA MD Richard Smith said: ““I would like to congratulate Keir Mather MP on being appointed as a Minister at the Department of Transport.

“His is a new role with responsibility for freight and borders, decarbonisation and electric vehicles – and we very much look forward to supporting him on these key areas of interest to our industry.

“We also look forward to continuing our good working relationships with Simon Lightwood MP, and Lilian Greenwood who returns to DfT overseeing local transport.”
