Motor Transport in association with leading 3PL GXO is holding a free to watch webinar on 17 October 2024 to discuss the vital issue of how the road transport industry should be handling the recent influx of new drivers to ensure they are properly prepared for life on the road.

Following the much-publicised driver shortage of 2019/20, we saw many new recruits joining our industry thanks to the increased funding available from the government as well as increased awareness of the benefits available.

The professionalisation of the industry has been instrumental in supporting the existing driver population and increased safety for all. But there’s still more to be done. Drivers need the right tools, and more importantly behaviours, from day one to keep them, and other road users, safe. Ongoing care is required to ensure both full-time and agency drivers are familiar with the vehicles, operations and processes – the days of ‘here are the keys, mate, away you go’ must be consigned to history.

Chris Hyde, Managing Director – convenience and food services at GXO, will explain how the company has built a safety-first culture to support its entire driver population. From the company’s own New Driver CPC to its Driver Academy and Road to Zero campaign, Chris will explore the ways in which GXO puts safety first and provides learning and development opportunities to set drivers up for success.

Mark Callow, Fleet services and compliance director at GXO, will also demonstrate how investment in technology fits into a wider safety strategy, enhancing fleet safety, assisting drivers and protecting other road users.

Paul Allera, Technical director at the Road Haulage Association, will share his seven reasons why investing in quality training and prioritising safety standards is essential to meet regulatory requirements, protect drivers and the public, and promote sustainable practices within the industry.
