The public will get a taste of what it’s like to drive an HGV at a Midlands truckstop this month, when a driving simulator is used to demonstrate the difficulties of being a professional driver.
SNAP has teamed up with the RHA and Certas Energy to raise awareness of truck driving skills and this includes an HGV driving simulator being deployed at TheStop at The Hollies in Staffordshire.
The event on 28 August represents the final leg of the 2024 SNAP truckpark tour and members of the public will get the chance to test their abilities against professional drivers.
SNAP said the day would help the public understand the nuances and difficulties of truck driving as a profession – with their driving simulator times compared to the experts.
“Truck driving is a highly skilled profession, and this event will help the public to understand how difficult it can be,” said SNAP MD Matthew Bellamy.
“Drivers go through hours of training to hone their skills and they can perform driving manoeuvres that most of us can only dream of.”
SNAP, Certas Energy and the RHA will also highlight the training drivers must complete to ensure they are fit to drive professionally on the road, including the 35 hours of periodic driver CPC training.
David Weaver, manager of The Hollies, TheStop, which is operated by Certas Energy’s roadside services division, said: “We are really excited to host SNAP for the final stop of its Truckpark Tour.
“We know how hard HGV drivers work, they are extensively trained and are masters behind the wheel, so we are looking forward to seeing how both experienced HGV drivers and members of the public take to the HGV simulator.”
