A guide to brake testing for operators struggling to understand their reports has been produced to cut through “engineering jargon”.

The FTA said its members’ guide will help readers understand how brake performance is calculated and what else they should be looking out for.

Phil Lloyd, FTA head of engineering and vehicle standards policy, said: “Transport managers without an engineering background should understand that even though a report says ‘pass’ there may still be issues that need to be considered.”

The guide was launched by West of England TC Kevin Rooney, who said: “We are calling on operators and transport managers to build confidence in their braking systems. This is only possible through good testing and knowing what that looks like on paper.

“Analysing brake test printouts carefully is vital,” he added. “It is how operators and transport managers can make sure roller brake tests complement the preventative maintenance inspections.

“Without this, how can they know whether the braking systems are in good, efficient working order and properly adjusted?”
