The death of a lorry driver from severe burns while he was cooking on a gas cylinder in his cab has highlighted the dangers of using portable cooking devices in enclosed spaces.

Darius Labunskas died at Watnall Road Aerodrome following the fire last year.

Firefighters from Nottinghamshire fire and rescue service (NFRS) were mobilised at 11:04pm on the 26 July 2025 after a call to joint fire control reported that a person was on fire.

Labunskas was transported to the Queens Medical Centre where he died the following morning.

A subsequent fire investigation determined that the fire originated from a three kilogram LPG gas cylinder being used for cooking inside the enclosed lorry cab.

An inquest into his death concluded that the 54-year-old driver died as a result of severe burns.

Beth Pearson, NFRS fire investigation and arson reduction officer, said: “On behalf of Nottinghamshire fire and rescue service, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to all who knew Mr Labunskas.”

Head of community safety and engagement Richard Leighton added: “This tragic incident highlights the dangers of using portable cooking devices in enclosed spaces.

“These devices should only be used in well ventilated, appropriate outdoor areas.

“It is essential to check that equipment is in good condition before use, to never leave it unattended while operating, and to ensure it is cleaned and safely shut down afterwards.”
