Northgate Cannock workshop[58334]

Northgate Vehicle Hire is recruiting 50 technicians to strengthen its service and maintenance teams across its 54 workshops and its fleet of 50,000 LCVs.

The move coincides with Northgate receiving its IMI Electric Vehicle Accreditation, which allows the firm to manage its own EV training internally. The company has already launched training sessions for its technicians so they can service and maintain the electric vehicles (EVs) in its fleet.

Thirteen per cent of Northgate’s new vacancies are for mobile vehicle technicians who can be deployed from its branches to customer sites. This strategy reflects the company's belief that since EVs have fewer moving parts, there will be an increase in remote servicing.

Tim Bailey, Northgate’s fleet director said: "Our workshops remain very busy as the general age of the vehicles we provide support for increases following the reduced supply of new vehicles coming into the market.

"As a result, we are recruiting more technicians as well as getting more of them ‘EV ready’ as our fleet gradually transitions from internal combustion engines to electric."

“We employ an extensive and loyal technician team with plenty of scope for promotion within branch and across the wider Redde Northgate network,” he added.

Northgate’s strategy of running its own workshops has continued with the acquisition of traffic management specialists Blakedale in 2022 and FridgeXpress the chilled and freezer van rental business in 2023 which both operate their own customer support and maintenance facilities.

The acquisition if Rugby-based FridgeXpress, which continues to trade under its own brand, added over 600 chilled and freezer vans and trailers and more than 100 customers nationwide, mostly in the pharmaceutical and food sectors, to the group.
