The country’s second clean air zone (CAZ) launches in Birmingham on Tuesday (1 June) and the BVRLA is reminding fleet operators to assess the impact on their business.

Pre-Euro-6 diesel vehicles will be required to pay a daily £50 charge to enter the zone, which lies within the A4540 ring road.

Non-compliant cars will be charged £8 a day.

The BVRLA said studies suggested that around 60% of the 200,000 vehicles that enter the city centre each day could be affected.

Bath launched the first CAZ in March, but more zones are imminent in Bristol, Bradford, Portsmouth, Greater Manchester, Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside.

London operates a more stringent Ultra-Low Emission Zone and this will be extended to an area 18-times larger than the original Low Emission Zone in October.

The BVRLA is offering a web guide that provides information for fleets about the country’s CAZs, how they work and what administrative support is available for fleets.

BVRLA CE Gerry Keaney said: “Our rental and leasing members are a good option for someone who regularly travels through a Clean Air Zone.

“They have a huge variety of CAZ-compliant vehicles that are available on a flexible and fixed-cost basis.”
