Peter Hughes, MD and owner of Earl Transport based in Oswaldtwistle near Accrington, was presented with the Carmen Lifetime Achievement Award at last night’s Woodmongers Banquet held at the Mansion House in the City of London.

Hughes founded the family firm in 1978 and it has built a successful business on a “commitment to delivering outstanding transport solutions to our valued clients” and “building long-term relationships with our clients by providing tailored solutions that address their specific requirements.”

Presenting the award, senior Traffic Commissioner Richard Turfitt described Hughes as a “legend in his own lifetime”.

Sally Gilson, policy lead - skills and drivers at the RHA,  was presented with the Carmen Award of Merit for outstanding service, commitment and impact within the transport industry.

Gilson has been central to promoting skills, training and workforce development and is heavily involved in the Trailblazer Group for Transport and Logistics‘ development of relevant apprenticeships as well as  working to secure changes to the unpopular Apprenticeship Levy. 

The Herbert Crow Education Award was presented jointly to Carl Hughes Driver Training and Annie Graham, apprenticeship manager at Logistics UK.

The evening was introduced by the Lord Mayor of the City of London Alastair King and the guest speaker was Sir John Parker GBE who has chaired several major organisations including National Grid and the Bank of England.

The banquet was a joint event held by the Worshipful Companies of Fuellers and Carmen who buried their differences in 2004 after decades of conflict.
