Whistl’s logistics division plans to increase the size of its network during the next two years, with plans to move into more “affluent” logistics areas.

Logistics division director Dean Hulse told Motortransport.co.uk that its depot network  is likely to double in size in 2015/16. It currently operates seven distribution hubs across the UK, equivalent to about one million ft² of warehousing space.

Although the service has been up and running for the past 18 months, Hulse said, it has gained momentum since Whistl rebranded from its former TNT Post identity last year.

Hulse said: “In the last 12 months we were set up as a separate division [to the rest of Whistl’s business] and we’ve gained significant pace.

“Whilst we were sort of associated with the mail industry, it just made sense [to go into contract logistics] with our indepth knowledge of logistics and service capabilities.”

The business operates a fleet of more than 200 vehicles, most of which are 44 tonne artics, but it also operates a significant amount of 18-tonners.

It provides ambient and refrigerated transport for the food and grocery sector, as well as transport for customers in the high value and packaging sectors. It recently revealed a three-year contract with Jiffy.

Whistl also services the retail sector and provides high-street deliveries for major retailers. Other services include reverse logistics, full-loads, groupage, general logistics and on-site transport planning and distribution.

While its mainstay is in the UK market, Hulse said the company also receives a significant amount of inbound international work, but plans to increase its domestic presence in the coming months.
