Scottish timber transporter Coille Haulage has taken on three Volvo FH 540 tractor units on a four-year contract hire deal with Asset Alliance.

The trucks will average 120,000km a year and work in often demanding off-road conditions, moving heavy loads from the west coast to paper and sawmills across the country.

As the firm’s drivers are often away overnight, they have been specified with Globetrotter cabs and a selection of features including fridge, microwave, coffee maker, parking heater and a wide bed.

Bruce Johnston, workshop manager at Coille Haulage, said: “It’s the first time we’ve used Asset Alliance Group, and they did us a great contract hire deal.

“It means we have the peace of mind of new trucks that we can rely on for our demanding work, and as they come with repair and maintenance included we only handle the fuel and tyres.”

The FHs come with Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission.

Johnston added it was so impressed with the service it received that it ordered a third truck with the same specification, which will be on the road in the next few months.

Established 35 years ago by Allan Johnston, the family firm based in Lochgilphead, Argyll, counts on Allan’s wife Mhairi Johnston, sons Bruce and Adam and Bruce’s wife Charlotte, to keep the 22-strong fleet of predominately Volvo trucks on task pulling a mix of trailers.
