Test centres with highest and lowest pass rates revealed

Rookley LGV’s pass rate was 93.9% between April 2024 and March 2025, according to government figures.

Bristol’s Kingswood test centre came second, with an average pass rate of 90.6% over the same period.

Hamiltons in Kings Lynn was third with 89.8% and Perth’s Arran Road was fourth with 88.7%.

At the other end of the table, Camborne in Cornwall and Llantrisant in South Wales were joint last, with pass rates of just 50% for off-road exercises – which include ‘S’ shaped reversing manoeuvres and uncoupling and recoupling procedures.

Weedon LGV, Featherstone and Cannock Street in Leicester also had low pass rates: 50.2%, 56.3% and 56.8% respectively.

DS Automobiles Accessories and Online Marketing Surgery (OMS) compiled the list based on average off-road exercise pass rate figures obtained from gov.uk.

An OMS spokesman said location was a significant factor when taking an HGV test: “Rural or island test centres like Rookley on the Isle of Wight tend to have less congestion, which can make off-road exercises and manoeuvres easier to manage under less pressure,” he said.

The spokesman added: “Preparation is everything when it comes to the HGV off-road test.

“Candidates should practise in the same type of vehicle they’ll use on test day as familiarity with the turning circle, visibility and gearbox can make a big difference.

“Spending extra time perfecting key manoeuvres, such as reversing into a bay and the controlled stop, can also help avoid the most common mistakes.”
