Retail deliveries for same day courier CitySprint doubled over the Christmas peak, in comparison to 2011’s figures.
The firm handled over a quarter of a million retail deliveries during December, its busiest Christmas peak to date, experiencing its largest volumes on Thursday 18 December.
Chief executive Patrick Gallagher said home retail delivery order volumes were maintained up until Christmas Eve, showing that last minute Christmas shopping was not confined to the high street.
It recruited an additional 300 couriers to handle increased volumes over the peak period, which Gallagher said “ran smoothly”.
Gallagher said: “We’ve seen a phenomenal growth in online retail this Christmas, with those retailers that offer convenient delivery options benefiting the most from the increase. More and more consumers are now looking for retailers to offer more flexible delivery options, including later shopping window cut-offs as well as evening, scheduled and same day delivery.”
