15) Eric Born, chief executive, Wincanton
Wincanton remains the largest British owned and based third-party logistics provider in the UK and Born continues to run the business under the ‘no surprises’ mantra with great success. Born admits that he likes the business to be “boring”. If so, he’s delivered a share price increase from 126p in December 2013 to 160p in December 2014 by being boring.
Wincanton has won new and renewed contracts, among others, with General Dynamics UK, Adidas, Total, Howdens Joinery and a wine and spirits contract with Waitrose by being “boring”. It’s also benefited from the construction boom in the past year.
If boring means steady growth, then Born has cracked it. Born is also targeting market share growth in 2015, particularly in retail. That will be far from boring.
