Hexagon Leasing has partnered with a firm specialising in preventing wheel detachment and is offering the product to all customers opting for new lease 18-tonne+ vehicles.

CogLock provides a visual indicator and secure locking mechanism and it also streamlines maintenance.

A wheel that comes loose from an HGV on a motorway at 56mph can reach speeds of up to 90mph before potentially colliding with another vehicle.

In 2006, the Transport Research Laboratory estimated the typical annual frequency of wheel fixing problems in the UK to be between 150 and 400 wheel detachments, with between 10 and 27 resulting in injury accidents and between three and seven fatal accidents.

Andy Towns, Hexagon operations director, said: “Having been in the truck industry for many years, I have had the unfortunate experience of witnessing the consequences of individuals neglecting to monitor and check their vehicles’ wheel nuts correctly.

“In light of this, we at Hexagon are pleased to offer an additional safety option to our customers.

“The CogLock system provides operators with a visible indicator to identify any loose wheel nuts, while simultaneously offering a locking mechanism to prevent wheel loosening and subsequent vehicle abandonment during travel.”

CogLock’s founder Chris Coghill said it was a huge compliment that Hexagon had chosen to partner with its solution: “Hexagon’s proactive approach towards offering safer and more reliable vehicles to their customers shows their dedication towards compliance, safety, and protecting their customers and the general public,” he added.
