Morecambe-based JM Gorry & Son closed down after coming under “immense strain” due to losing drivers in the years following Brexit, according to its administrator.
The Lancashire haulier ceased trading in July after more than 60 years of business and 24 staff were made redundant following the appointment of FTS Recovery to handle its affairs.
In a report to creditors, it said the firm had traded successfully for decades and became one of the county’s longest-established transport operators.
At its peak, the haulier had 70 employees and it operated 50 HGVs.
FTS said: “Throughout the years the company adapted to the ever-changing industry, remaining profitable despite major setbacks.
“In recent years the company lost a significant number of drivers. This was due to various external factors, out of the company’s control, such as Brexit; when the UK left the European Union approximately 10 drivers returned overseas.”
FTS said increased legislation and regulations, including the increased training requirements for drivers due to the Driver CPC and the retirement of long-standing drivers also added pressure to JM Gorry.
“The loss of drivers put an immense strain on the company, at times there were not enough drivers to service the lorries,” FTS added.
“Recruitment proved extremely difficult, with the above factors impacting competitors industry wide.
“The company reduced its fleet size as a result; however, to break even the company required the continuous operation of 30 lorries.”
The administrator said the haulier increased wages in order to prevent a further loss of staff, but this also had the effect of reducing the company’s profit.
During the year ending 31 October 2024 it made a net loss of just under £19,000 and this increased to around £65,000 in 2025.
Discussions between director John Gorry and FTS were already taking place before Gorry unexpectedly passed away in June and so the remaining sole director Shaun Gorry continued talks with the administrator before the haulier officially ceased trading on 17 July.
