Parcel delivery network Geopost has launched an international mapping service called Geopost Vision, which uses the company’s 65,000-strong delivery fleet to gather data on a constant basis across the UK and Europe, which it will share with clients.

The service uses connected dashcams which are installed in several thousand delivery vehicles, including DPD’s fleet in the UK, to collect anonymised, GDPR-compliant imagery across urban, suburban, and rural environments.

The data collected will be provided to its clients, including mapping providers, mobility companies, smart city stakeholders and insurers.

Geopost’s ability to collect data is considerable, with the company operating over 65,000 vehicles every day, covering more than two billion kilometres per year across 22 countries.

Announcing the launch, Martin Calmels, Geopost Vision chief executive, said: “By harnessing Geopost’s unmatched delivery network and state-of-the-art camera technology, we’re building Europe’s most up-to-date and scalable street-level imagery platform, providing access to GDPR compliant data that can enhance navigation and road safety, or improving the quality of urban infrastructure.”

Geopost said all collected imagery will undergo strict anonymisation to remove personal identifiers such as faces and license plates, to meet GDPR requirements.

The company added that the imagery will never be made publicly available and will only be used by Geopost Vision customers to detect, for example, new objects on the road such as road signs, speed limits and traffic lights.

Geopost Vision’s imagery is already available in 11 European countries, including the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Portugal, and the Netherlands with the company planning to cover 21 countries by the middle of next year.
