Commercial vehicle fleets serving the UK energy and fuels sector are expanding as rising demand and shifting energy use patterns reshape the market.
Motor Transport Fleet Data shows a 2.4% increase in trucks operated by major energy industry fleet operators since July last year, alongside a 1.8% rise in trailers. The snapshot covers 40 operators, including fuel tanker firms, energy suppliers and biofuel specialists, operating a combined 10,477 trucks and 5,696 trailers.
Sixteen companies recorded fleet growth, led by Olleco, Barton Petroleum, Highland Fuels and Greenergy Flexigrid, while most others remained stable and only a small number posted declines.
The wider trend mirrors official data showing UK energy consumption rose by 2.6% in 2024, driven by domestic, services and transport demand, despite a dip in industrial use.
Growth is being fuelled by a shift towards lower-carbon fuels, with electricity and biofuels taking an increasing share of the energy mix. Biofuels accounted for 8.4% of road fuel use in 2023, helping drive expansion among operators such as Olleco and Greenergy.
Fleet Data is based on weekly O-licence updates from the Office of the Traffic Commissioners.
