Holly Smith is following in her father Shane’s footsteps and joining Somerset-based C & D South West as an HGV driver.
Smith first joined the team for work experience and later took on a part-time office role, inspired by the company’s welcoming environment.
Now, she’s achieved her goal of becoming an HGV driver, working alongside her father, who is approaching his tenth year with the business, and continuing a family tradition at the company, which was founded by MD Lorna Hammond’s grandfather in 1987.
With the average age of drivers in the sector being 57 and a historically male-dominated landscape, C & D are keen to break stereotypes and create an environment that welcomes all genders and has given its full backing to Smith’s ambitions to become an HGV driver.
Lorna and HR & finance manager Cayla Hammond also followed in their father’s footsteps, bringing their own unique strengths to C & D South West, which is a Palletforce founding member.
The sisters are both advocates for increasing female representation in the sector and are dedicated to creating opportunities that support women entering this traditionally male-dominated industry.
Lorna Hammond said: “It’s fantastic to see more women showing interest in becoming HGV drivers. We believe that diversity strengthens our team and brings fresh perspectives to the industry.”
Cayla Hammond added, “As leaders, we’re committed to creating opportunities for women in transport.”
Holly Smith said: “My dad has been with C & D South West for a long time, and it’s a fantastic place to work. It’s encouraging to see more women entering transport and logistics, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
