Retailers are gearing up for the Black Friday rush and Amazon, the company which introduced the concept to the UK in 2010, is topping the chart as the fastest growing retail vehicle fleet.
Latest figures from MT Fleet Data reveal that Amazon has increased its truck fleet by 51% and its trailer fleet by 25% over the past year. Other retailers seeing double digit growth include Next, Greggs and Wren Kitchens.
However, overall, the number of trucks operated by the 21 major retailers covered in our survey has fallen by 2.2% to 16,771 since November last year, while the number of trailers has risen by 1.7% to 19,307.
A number retailers have seen the balance of their fleets change. Sainsbury’s, for example, has cut its truck fleet by 13% but at the same increased its trailer fleet by11%. Next has seen no change to its truck fleet by increased its trailer fleet by 35%. Asda has cut its truck fleet by 21.5% with no change to the number of trailers it operates.
In contrast, B&M Retail has increased its truck fleet by 4% but cut its trailer fleet by almost 12%.
Almost half the 21 major retailers covered by MT Fleet Data have seen no change to their fleets over the past year.
The biggest fleet cut has come at Poundland, which has struggled in recent years as competition and inflation made its £1 price policy difficult to maintain. In the year to 28 September 2025 the company made a loss of £120m. It was acquired by American investment firm Gordon Brothers in June 2025, which, according to press reports, is now looking to recoup its investment.
MT Fleet Data is Motor Transport’s listing of the UK’s largest third party and own account HGV fleet operators. Based on the weekly O-licence updates issued by the Office of the Traffic Commissioners, Fleet Data enables subscribers quickly to identify operators in each of the eight traffic areas based on the number of vehicles on the licence and type of operator.
