Menzies Distribution has made moves to reduce waste in the travel industry by providing travel agents with recycling bins, which will then be collected free of charge.

BP Travel Marketing, part of Menzies, will provide 150 travel agents across the south-east with the bins for brochure shrink-wrap and plastic brochure wrapping, as part of a three-month trial.

The company said the aim was to increase the amount of single use plastic being recycled and then roll out the initiative across the UK.

The pilot is being sponsored by cruise firm Hurtigruten, Gold Medal and Travel 2, among others.

Steve Martin, BP Travel Marketing general manager, said he came up with the idea with Hurtigruten while they were discussing environmental schemes: “It is such a simple concept, but we hope that the convenience of the scheme will result in a significant reduction in plastic waste,” he said.

“As an industry we want to do our bit to ensure that we have a more sustainable model for the future.”
