Magnum Logistics said its new bespoke facility at DP World London Gateway in Essex has allowed it to vastly accelerate its sustainability drive.
Commercial director Eddie Ryan said the new BREEAM and Planet Mark certified site is a perfect combination of high-level racking, bulk storage space, fulfilment areas, and dock-level and drive-through access.
“Creating a purpose-built facility meant we could add in some important environmental features as part of our target to reduce our carbon footprint by 40% by 2040,” he said. “Twenty-five per cent of the roof on our 100,000sq ft warehouse is covered by solar PV panels, which produce enough energy to power 184 terraced houses each year. We’ve also invested in rainwater harvesting to reduce the amount of water used from the mains supply. In addition, our container shipments are moved from port to hub on electric tug vehicles.”
Ryan added that Magnum had set itself some tough sustainability targets, including moving its fleet to all electric or low emission fuels, diverting waste from landfill and using 100% energy from renewable sources.
“We’re committed to greener logistics and environmental management for the benefit of our employees and our customers, because we all have a responsibility to protect the planet for future generations,” he added.
A member of Palletways, Magnum’s initiatives were also applauded by network director Warwick Trimble, who said: “We know the transport sector is generally a high contributor to UK greenhouse gas emissions, which account for approximately 26% on goods vehicles and 10% of the total. As a network we continuously seek ways to reduce our carbon footprint, optimise resource efficiency, and promote environmental stewardship throughout our supply chain, so it’s great to see the strides being taken by Magnum.”
