ThermoKing and Frigoblock

Initiatives to reduce noise pollution were celebrated at the John Connell Awards 2018, held at the Palace of Westminster this week (24 October).

The awards, run by the Noise Abatement Society, are now in their 17th year.

They acknowledge the importance of the quality of sound in people’s lives and recognise companies that strive to reduce the negative impact of unnecessary noise.

Winning the Quiet Logistics Award category, sponsored by the FTA, was ThermoKing and Frigoblock for their low-noise transport refrigeration range (main picture).

The technology includes geo-fencing and noise abatement features, which allow an operator to remotely programme an automatic switch to quiet and low-emission mode when in urban areas.

Gloria Elliott, NAS chief executive, said: “NAS applauds Thermo King and Frigoblock for supporting clean and quiet delivery solutions through its advanced technology.”

Also Highly Commended in the same category was e-cargobikes for its silent, zero-emission last-mile delivery operation.

Elliott said: “NAS heartily welcomes ecargobikes’ clean, quiet operation for last mile delivery as another practical option for distribution.”

Scooping the Quiet Mark Commercial Sector Award, sponsored by Anderson Acoustics, was the John Lewis Partnership for its work in establishing a fleet of “very clean, very quiet trucks” with the purchase of 61 Scania CNG tractor units, six of which are also trialling quiet refrigeration technology.

In addition to adapting its fleet, it has implemented best practice guidance for quiet logistics from Transport for London and the NAS - for example, installing quiet floors and noise absorbing equipment at sites, ensuring that radios are turned off and that staff show considerate behaviour.
