Scania has officially opened its new research and development proving ground at a special inauguration ceremony.

The new 85-hectare facility will be the new home for all its development, testing and validation work in the future.

Scania said its SEK 975m (£73.9m) investment strengthens Traton Group’s and Scania’s R&D capabilities and allows vehicle and solution testing to take place in Södertälje, rather than being outsourced.

The Scania and Traton teams will focus on further developing electrification, autonomous systems, safety, vehicle dynamics and more conventional vehicle technologies at the site.

Christian Levin, president and chief executive of Traton Group and Scania, said: “The transformation of transport requires us to continuously strengthen the way we develop and validate new technologies.

“This investment is about building the capabilities we need for the future while ensuring that the solutions we bring to our customers have the safety, quality and performance they expect.”
