The creation of a dedicated minister for logistics is a reflection of the critical role the industry can play in cranking up the UK economy, according to business groups.
RHA MD Richard Smith said the expansion of transport minister Keir Mather’s role to include minister for maritime, aviation and logistics ensured the sector had a strong voice at the heart of government: “It is particularly welcome because, over the last 12 months, the Alliance of Logistics Trade Associations (ALTA) has consistently called for the creation of a dedicated minister for logistics,” he said.
“Through ALTA, trade associations can speak with a stronger collective voice on the issues where our industries share common ground, while allowing each organisation to remain focused on the specific needs and priorities of the sectors it represents.
“Creating the role is an important step. What matters now is what we collectively achieve through it – bringing government and industry together to develop practical, evidence-based policy that recognises logistics as an enabler of economic growth, productivity and thriving communities across the UK.”
The department for transport said in his role, Mather would be responsible for freight and borders, security and resilience, as well as aviation and maritime issues.
Logistics UK said the transport minister had been “a great champion” for the industry and his new appointment showed that the government was listening.
“Our industry is key to the provision of every item that the UK needs to grow and flourish, and we look forward to working closely with Minister Mather and his team to help power the government’s plans for growth in the coming months,” said Ben Fletcher, Logistics UK chief executive.
