The Welcome Break Charitable Fund is bringing together Macmillan Cancer Support, Mates in Mind and the RHA, on 21 May, to launch its HGV Driver Wellness Initiative at Rothwell Truck Stop.
The partnership said it will provide HGV drivers with practical knowledge, guidance and resources focused on both mental and physical health, helping to promote the importance of regular check ins and check-ups, “because no one should have to carry a heavy load alone.”
The launch event will run at the Welcome Break Rothwell Truck Stop on the A14 from 11am to 3pm and will see representatives from all partner organisations on site to offer advice and information.
Resources will also be available in multiple languages, and mental health first aiders will be present for anyone who would like to talk in confidence.
Drivers attending will have the opportunity to visit the stands and access support materials, as well as enjoy a free hot drink, fruit and Krispy Kreme donuts.
HGV drivers are more likely to experience negative health outcomes, HGV driving significantly impacts health due to long hours, isolation, and high-pressure conditions, leading to high rates of stress, anxiety, and depression.
Physically, drivers face risks from sedentary work, including obesity, hypertension, and fatigue-related issues. These factors often cause high driver turnover, with 47% having considered quitting due to stress, according to the British Safety Council.
The HGV Driver Wellness Initiative aims to raise awareness and start conversations about the support available.
With Macmillan and Mates in Mind bringing specialist expertise, and the RHA representing the UK’s largest dedicated trade association for HGV, coach, and van operators, the initiative is designed to help drivers access the right information and feel better supported, on and off the road.
Nicola Marshall, Welcome Break people director, said: “HGV drivers keep the country moving, but too often they face challenges that can impact both their physical and mental wellbeing.
“By bringing together Macmillan Cancer Support, Mates in Mind and the Road Haulage Association, we want to make it easier for drivers to access trusted advice and practical resources, and to remind them that support is there when they need it.”
