HGV safety standards and design are to be hotly debated at this year’s Freight in the City Expo, following London mayor Sadiq Khan’s announcement last month to introduce a world-first Direct Vision Standard for lorries entering the capital.

Hannah White, programme manager freight and fleet at TfL, will bring delegates up to speed with the latest work on the capital’s Safer Trucks programme, including an insight into the latest research it has commissioned into direct vision from HGV cabs.

This research is being carried out by technical consultancy Arup and the University of Leeds, and endeavours to better understand the role of eye contact (direct vision) over indirect vision (through mirrors and VDUs) in improving road safety and reducing HGV collisions with vulnerable road users.

We’ll also hear from transport law expert Jonathon Backhouse about the most common compliance pitfalls operators can fall prey to when working in an urban environment.

Jack Semple, head of policy at the RHA, will also take a look at whether more incentives and clearer frameworks are needed from national and local governments to persuade operators to make the switch to cleaner, safer vehicles.
