Hauliers in North Yorkshire recently met with Rishi Sunak MP to discuss the A66 dualling upgrade and key infrastructure investment in the region.

RHA MD Richard Smith and directors at Bedale-based Bulk Logistics sat down with the MP for Richmond and Northallerton and talked about how upgrading the route would deliver £521m in transport efficiency gains; save £477m in travel time and operating costs and add £125m in improved journey reliability.

Smith said: “It was a pleasure to welcome former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak MP to Bulk Logistics Group, a proud member of the RHA.

“During the visit, we discussed the campaign to dual the A66 which is essential for unlocking economic growth, improving road safety, and ensuring reliable east-west connectivity for freight, tourism, and key to connecting communities across the North of England.

Smith added: “The A66 is a vital for our sector, carrying over 80 million tonnes of cargo annually to the North West and Scotland.

“Investing in this project and getting spades in the ground is important to the long-term growth of the North and our national economy.”

Sunak urged Ministers to greenlight the £14bn project: “Strong economic growth is essential for our country’s future and a properly upgraded A66 is vital to help businesses across our region, and the UK as a whole, drive that growth,” he said.
