Volvo Trucks has set a new benchmark for long-haul efficiency, with the FH Aero returning an unprecedented 11.25mpg on MT sister title Commercial Motor’s 477-mile fuel test. The figure beats Volvo’s previous record by almost 1.5mpg and places the new flagship decisively at the top of CM’s fuel-test rankings for 44-tonne operations.
The two-day route is designed to replicate real-world working conditions. Starting and finishing in Nuneaton, it includes the A5, long stretches of the M6 to Gretna Green, challenging regional roads in southern Scotland, and a return south on the A1, M18, M1 and M69. Fuel levels, distance and time are measured at fixed checkpoints, allowing accurate comparisons between vehicles.
The previous best result was set in 2022 by the FH 460 with I-Save, which achieved 9.82mpg. This time, the FH Aero 6x2 Globetrotter XL raised the bar dramatically. Will Shiers, editor of Commercial Motor, says the manufacturer “didn’t just break its own record – it absolutely smashed it”.
Christian Coolsaet, MD of Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland, says the outcome reflects the firm’s focus on efficiency and sustainability.
Aerodynamic revisions, camera mirrors and Volvo’s I-Save powertrain combine to deliver the model’s impressive performance. To read the road test click here: Supplements
