A collision in Leominster this week in which a bin lorry struck a house and caused part of it to collapse led to the death of a passenger.

The wagon is believed to have left the road in Mill Street and collided with the property shortly after 6.40am on Tuesday (11 November).

West Mercia police confirmed there were three people in the refuse truck and passenger Andzie Stanik, 62, died at the scene.

The driver and a second passenger were treated by paramedics and taken to hospital for further treatment. The building was empty and no-one else was injured.

They are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

PC Paul Bosley from Herefordshire’s serious collision investigation unit, said: “Firstly, our thoughts are with the friends and family of the man who passed away yesterday, as well as everyone else affected by the incident.

“We are continuing to ask people to avoid the area and the building itself as local authorities work to make it safe.

“We ask anyone who saw the bin lorry travelling along Mill Street before the collision, or witnessed the collision itself, to please get in touch with us.

“Relevant dashcam or CCTV footage could also help us in our investigation.”

Herefordshire council leader Jonathan Lester said it was deeply saddened by the death of a council-contracted worker: “Although not a direct employee of the council, he was a part of our wider council family, delivering services to residents across the county,” he said.

“On behalf of Herefordshire Council, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at FCC Environment where he worked.

“We also send our thoughts to the two other individuals injured in the incident and wish them a full recovery.

“I want to thank all the emergency services, council staff and responders who attended today’s incident for their professionalism in extremely difficult circumstances.

“We will continue to work closely with our partners to assess the situation and enable the continuing response and investigation.”
