Motorists are being urged not to linger around lorries while attempting to overtake them and be aware of their limited field of vision, as part of a campaign to cut collisions.

Drivers trying to pass HGVs are encouraged to know the danger zones around large vehicles, particularly to their immediate left and right.

The campaign highlights how they should overtake with care, pass swiftly and never hang around alongside or immediately behind the cab.

Motorists are told never to tailgate a lorry either, preventing the HGV driver from seeing them.

The campaign by National Highways encourages drivers to stay visible, pass with care and give more space.

Heidi Duffy, a traffic management officer at Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Most drivers have never set foot in, let alone driven, an HGV, so they do not appreciate the challenges associated with driving them – such as increased stopping distances and greatly restricted views of passing traffic.

“That’s why we are supporting this campaign to educate drivers about the four zones of greatest danger and to urge them never to linger around HGVs.

“When collisions do occur, the size difference between vehicles greatly increases the risk of death and serious injury.

“We are determined to reduce the number of such collisions and are urging local drivers to pay attention to these warnings.”
