Every quarter the Business Intelligence Index will also produce a weighted index of business confidence among road transport operators; track the fluctuations in this index and establish the reasons why the market has such sentiments.

In the second quarter – and first Business Intelligence Index survey -the business confidence index stood at 6.78 (based on a score of 1-10).

Indicating a strong level of business confidence, some 23.6% of senior managers at road transport businesses across the UK told the Index that they expected to increase their fleet size by up to 10% in the next quarter, with a further two-thirds (65.3%) saying that their fleet size would stay the same.

Just 5.6% of those surveyed said that they would reduce their fleet size by up to 10%, with 1.2% of those surveyed looking to reduce their fleet size by more than 10% in the coming quarter. Conversely, 4.3% said that they would increase their fleet size by more than 10% in the coming quarter.

The Q2 survey, conducted before the EU Referendum Vote on 23 June, saw more than half (52.8%) say that they were ‘not concerned’ by a potential exit from the EU by the UK. Over a quarter (27%) said that they were concerned by such an exit ‘now’ with 9% saying they would be concerned in the next quarter and 11.2% believing that they would be concerned ‘over the next year’.

Business leaders are also split on hot button topics such as the price of fuel and the driver shortage. When it comes to the availability of skilled driver labour 45% say they are concerned ‘now’, but 41.5% are ‘not concerned’, while 5.6% said they would face concerns ‘in the next quarter’, and 7.9% said they would be concerned ‘over the next year’.
