Gregory Distribution is launching an HGV driver training academy at its Cullompton depot that aims to train up to 10 candidates a month to obtain their Category C licences.

The scheme was developed to help tackle the current driver shortage affecting the logistics sector, and will initially focus on training up candidates to work across the group's rigid vehicle fleet operations, predominantly in the South West, on milk collection, general distribution and palletised services.

It will complement existing company development programmes and localised depot recruitment drives and open days, as well as working with the Princes Trust to provide training to help disadvantaged young people start a logistics career.

Wannabe drivers will be drawn from existing company personnel, suitable external candidates and individuals through the Prince’s Trust who will be trained initially to HGV category C standard, as well as put through their Initial Driver CPC qualification.

Paul Willis, Gregory’s head of business support and compliance, who leads a team of 11 in-house driver-trainers, said: “HGV driver training today goes far beyond teaching someone to drive a vehicle from A to B. It requires an in-depth knowledge of transport and health & safety regulations, hazard awareness and risk assessment, vehicle maintenance, loading and unloading procedures and the ability to maximize the performance of the vehicle using very sophisticated in-cab technology.

"It is our responsibility as an employer to ensure the well-being and safety of our drivers and this is grounded in the quality and depth of the professional training we provide.”

Paul Jefferson, Gregory Distribution’s supply chain director, said: “We are immensely proud of our commitment to training and to playing a very proactive role in developing our workforce.

"We hope the driver training model we have developed will encourage new recruits into the profession by acknowledging the value of the jobs available and the high level of professionalism required to carry them out.”

Gregory Distribution employees 1,600 people at 22 sites nationwide, while its fleet comprises 500 trucks and 700 trailers.
