The Co-operative Group has completed the overhaul of its UK logistics network today (19 April) with the opening of its Castlewood DC in North Derbyshire. The official opening of the £22m DC brings to an end a project begun in 2004 to modernise the retailer’s distribution network, which saw it appoint Norbert Dentressangle to run its food logistics.
Castlewood is a 480,000ft² multi-temperature depot situated off junction 28 on the M1. It will be fully operational by October of this year, at which time it will employ more than 1,000 staff.
Steve Murrells, chief executive of the Co-operative Food, said: “The opening of Castlewood marks a major milestone for the Co-operative and the completion of a radical revamp of our entire logistics network.”
The Co-operative now has a national DC in Coventry and nine multi-temperature regional DCs.
