Clipper Logistics has revealed it has been inundated with requests from customers to provide supply chain support, while dealing with criticism by employees that it was failing to implement social distancing policies.

The BBC reported that workers at its Ollerton, Nottinghamshire warehouse had complained that they were being “crammed into corridors” and given no hand sanitiser.

A Clipper spokesman said the circumstances surrounding COVID-19 were evolving on a daily basis and the company was developing solutions to challenges placed on the supply chain: “We are continuing to monitor and adhere to all government advice and information on a daily basis,” he said.

“We have been inundated with requests from our customers to provide supply chain support to the existing infrastructure as a result of the demands placed upon them by COVID-19, as well as receiving additional requests for support from a wider network of essential services including major food retailers and other sectors of the economy.”

He said these requests encompassed warehousing, cross-dock, picking and transportation: “We have also introduced warehouse initiatives in a bid to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our team members, which includes stringent social distancing measures and cleaning regimes across the shop floor, communal areas and outside spaces in line with guidelines from the government and Public Health England,” he said.

Earlier this week, the MD of Europa Worldwide Group said it was a challenge for companies staying open to ensure they followed government guidelines for COVID-19, after a haulage company criticised a DHL depot for failing to comply with social distancing rules.

The Clipper Logistics spokesman added: “We are working tirelessly to fulfil gaps in the supply chain, to help our clients meet the significant increased demands placed upon them, whilst ensuring the utmost health and safety of our team.”
