Anne-Marie Trevelyan MP has been appointed as transport secretary under new PM Liz Truss’s reshuffled cabinet.
Previously secretary of state for international trade, Trevelyan tweeted that she was “thrilled” about her new role and added: “Transport is crucial to our lives - bringing people together, creating jobs & connecting the UK with the world. Looking forward to getting to work on the many challenges & opportunities transport brings.”
Berwick-upon-Tweed MP Trevelyan is the first female transport secretary since Justine Greening more than a decade ago.
She campaigned for dualling the A1 as far back as 2007 and in 2014 the then PM David Cameron announced an initial £290m investment to upgrade the road.
Trevelyan replaces Grant Shapps MP, who had held the role of transport secretary since July 2019.
Shapps tweeted: “It has been a privilege to serve as transport secretary; a job I loved. Now I look forward to being a strong voice on the backbenches, developing policies that will further the Conservative cause and the interests of my constituents in Welwyn Hatfield.”
