Among the speakers that will take to the main stage on 20 May at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry will be Sir Peter Hendy, Network Rail chair and Caroline Hicks, head of the the National Enforcement Group at the DVSA.
Hendy will provide delegates with the inside track on bridge strikes. This issue is a critical one for the industry, with an estimated 2,000 strikes per annum. Aside from the obvious issues of public safety and vehicle downtime due to repair, hauliers are now legally accountable for the associated damage to bridges and compensation costs to passengers.
When the value of undelivered goods, loss of productivity, vehicle damage, train delays, bridge repairs and road congestion is factored in, the wider cost to the economy is also staggering with estimated costs amounting to £23m per annum.
According to Hendy, “The prevalence of bridge strikes and the resulting danger they pose, combined with the disruption they cause, should be a major concern for us all. The transport sector must therefore make every effort to work together to actively reduce incidence levels.”
In her conference presentation, Hicks will outline the progress of Earned Recognition and highlight how the scheme is being used to more effectively target non-compliant operators.
Earned Recognition was first introduced in 2018 and is designed as a way to prove fleet operators meet driver and vehicle standards, with operators regularly sharing performance information with DVSA. As a result, vehicles are less likely to be stopped for inspections.
According to Hicks, Earned Recognition "has been adopted by many across the industry since it was introduced, and is proving to be very effective, both in terms of reducing stops for approved operators and supporting our efforts to target the seriously and serially non-compliant."
