DPD reveals £175m expansion plan

DPD is expanding a number of its sites and investing in a new sorting hub and depots to handle increased demand from online retailers. The £175m investment, which follows a period of growth after the launch of its Predict service, includes a £12m investment in building 10 new depots, £20m of funding to upgrade its Sheffield and Thetford depots, as well as opening a  £100m East Midlands sorting hub. “Substantial remedies needed” for UPS and TNT merger, says European Commission

The European Commission (EC) believes “substantial remedies are needed” before the proposed takeover of TNT Express by UPS can be cleared. In a merger review speech made on Friday (2 November), Joaquín Almunia, EC vice-president responsible for competition, said that “serious competition concerns would arise” if it went ahead without revisions. Lancashire’s Ainsworth & Martin has become North West Logistics, relocating from its Preston home to a new site in Accrington. Fortec-member Ainsworth & Martin acquired North West Logistics some two years ago. The complementary businesses had been run separately, but after a £100,000 investment in the Accrington facility, Ainsworth & Martin joined its stablemate at Altham Business Estate this summer. TNT Post has signed a deal with convenience store parcel network CollectPlus to provide international deliveries for SMEs. Yodel to cap parcel volumes during Christmas peak

Yodel has reduced and capped the amount of parcels it will handle during the Christmas peak, after the high volumes it experienced last year. The parcel carrier confirmed it will deliver a maximum of 4.25 million parcels during its busiest week of the Christmas peak to ensure that it provides a successful service for customers and parcels are not left undelivered. Tarmac consults with staff over Lafarge joint-venture

Tarmac has confirmed it is in consultation with staff, following media reports suggesting it intends to relocate its headquarters from Wolverhampton to Solihull as part of its joint-venture with Lafarge. Wincanton starts side-access tanker trial

Wincanton is trialling four low-level access tankers that is says will improve driver safety, and boost both its environmental credentials and vehicle utilisation. The “game changer” side manway design, which has been developed with manufacturer Feldbinder, provides side access to the silo tanker. The offer period for the proposed merger of UPS and TNT Express has once again been extended. Following an exemption granted by The Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM), the period has been extended until one week after competition clearances have been obtained from regulators, the European Commission and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. Profit rises 56% at Jack Richards & Son

Fakenham, Norfolk haulier Jack Richards & Son has reported a 56% rise in pre-tax profit, and £2.3m rise in turnover, for the year ending 31 May 2012.
