XPO Logistics is trialling low bridge alert technology to help make a dent in the 2,000 bridge strikes that occur every year.
The VUE Low Bridge Alerting System uses telematics to warn an HGV driver when bridges pose a strike risk along their route.
It is hoped the solution will eliminate the potential for human error to creep into infrastructure incidents and the system can also store the history of alerts for training and documentation purposes.
XPO said it is evaluating the system on its day and night distribution runs from its Bury St Edmunds depot.

Road transport lawyer Jonathan Backhouse recently said the majority of bridge strike cases that cross his desk involve agency drivers and account for up to 80% of incidents.
Most result in a public inquiry before a traffic commissioner, as well as a driver conduct hearing.
