Chereau has partnered with manufacturer Sono Motors to build solar powered refrigerated vehicles.

It said the solution provides the vehicle’s refrigeration unit with an additional 9.8kW, saving up to 8,475 litres of fuel and reducing CO2 emissions by more than 22-tonnes a year for diesel-powered cooling units.

Sono will equip the roof and sides of an existing Chereau semi-trailer with 54 solar modules, which will run the reefer unit by recharging the main battery.

Chereau president Damien Destremau said: “This partnership with Sono Motors will allow us to conduct extensive tests to verify the suitability of solar energy in temperature-controlled transport.

“The solar integration solutions provided by Sono Motors are perfectly suited to our semi-trailers.”

The vehicle will form part of Chereau’s demonstration fleet being previewed at the 2022 IAA Transportation in Hannover.

Tesco recently announced it was trialling 100% solar powered refrigerated trailers provided by Marshall Fleet Solutions fitted with its Titan system.
